  • Will radon mitigation affect the resale value of my home?
Radon mitigation can actually enhance the resale value of your home by providing potential buyers with peace of mind regarding radon levels. Additionally, having a radon mitigation system in place demonstrates proactive maintenance and care for the property.
  • How often should I retest my home for radon after mitigation?
After radon mitigation, it's recommended to retest your home every 2-5 years, or sooner if any significant changes occur to the property, such as renovations or changes to the foundation. Regular testing helps ensure that radon levels remain within acceptable limits over time.
  • How can I test my home for radon?
Homeowners can test their homes for radon using do-it-yourself radon test kits or by hiring a professional radon testing service. Radon test kits are typically placed in the lowest livable level of the home for a specified period, after which the samples are sent to a laboratory for analysis.
  • Are there any government regulations or guidelines regarding radon mitigation?
Many countries and regions have regulations or guidelines in place regarding radon mitigation, including requirements for radon testing in certain situations and standards for radon mitigation system installation. It's important to consult local authorities or radon professionals for specific regulations applicable to your area.
  • Can radon mitigation systems be installed in existing homes, or only in new construction?
Radon mitigation systems can be installed in both existing homes and new construction. Retrofitting existing homes with radon mitigation systems is a common practice and can effectively reduce radon levels to safe levels.
  • What should I expect during the radon mitigation process?
During the radon mitigation process, certified professionals will conduct an assessment of your home to determine the best mitigation strategy. This may involve drilling holes in the foundation, installing piping and fans, sealing cracks and gaps, and conducting post-mitigation testing to ensure effectiveness.
  • What steps can I take to maintain and ensure the effectiveness of my radon mitigation system?
To maintain the effectiveness of your radon mitigation system, it's important to perform regular inspections, replace air filters as recommended, monitor radon levels periodically, and address any issues promptly. Annual testing is also recommended to ensure that radon levels remain within acceptable limits.
  • What factors can affect the cost of radon mitigation?
Factors that can affect the cost of radon mitigation include the size and layout of the property, the type of radon mitigation system required, the accessibility of installation areas, and any additional features or upgrades requested by the homeowner.
  • How does radon mitigation work to reduce radon levels in a home?
Radon mitigation systems work by creating a pressure difference between the soil beneath a home and the indoor air. This pressure difference prevents radon gas from seeping into the home and redirects it to the outside, where it disperses harmlessly into the atmosphere.
  • What are the different types of radon mitigation systems available?
The most common types of radon mitigation systems include sub-slab depressurization, active soil depressurization, and crawl space encapsulation. Each system is designed to address specific radon entry points and property characteristics.
  • Can radon testing impact my property value?
Identifying and addressing radon issues can actually enhance your property value. Buyers appreciate knowing that radon has been tested and mitigated, showing a commitment to maintaining a safe environment.
  • How long does it take to get results from radon testing?
Short-term tests provide results within a week, while long-term tests take at least 91 days. Professional monitors can deliver real-time data, allowing for immediate insight into radon levels.
  • How often should I test my home for radon?
It is recommended to test your home every 2-5 years or after any major renovations. If you have never tested before or live in a high-risk area, it’s best to test as soon as possible.
  • Is radon testing really necessary in Calgary?
Yes, Calgary homes can have elevated radon levels due to the natural breakdown of uranium in the ground. Testing is the only way to know if your home is at risk, as radon is odorless, colorless, and tasteless.
  • How accurate are short-term radon tests?
Short-term tests provide a quick snapshot of radon levels, usually over 2-7 days. While useful for initial assessments, they may not capture daily variations, so a follow-up long-term test is recommended for more accurate results.
  • Can radon testing be done in newly built homes?
Yes, radon testing is crucial in newly built homes as radon can infiltrate through the foundation, even in brand-new construction. Testing early ensures that radon levels are safe from the start, protecting your family’s health from day one. New homes are often more airtight, which can lead to higher radon levels, making testing even more important.
  • What happens if my home has high radon levels?
If testing shows elevated radon levels, mitigation solutions are available to reduce radon to safe levels. Professional radon mitigation systems are highly effective and tailored to each home’s needs.
  • Are radon tests reliable in Calgary’s climate?
Yes, professional radon testing accounts for Calgary’s seasonal variations. Long-term tests, in particular, are designed to capture the fluctuations in radon levels that may occur during colder months when homes are sealed.
  • Is radon testing expensive?
Radon testing in Calgary is very affordable. Investing in testing is a small price to pay for the peace of mind of knowing your home is safe from radon exposure.
  • Will testing disrupt my daily routine?
Radon testing is non-invasive and won’t interfere with your daily activities. Monitors are placed discreetly in your home, and there is no need to alter your routine during the testing period.
  • Do I need radon mitigation if my home's radon levels are just above the safe limit?
Yes, even slightly elevated radon levels pose health risks. Mitigation can bring levels down to a safer range, protecting your family’s health.
  • Do radon mitigation systems require maintenance?
Yes, regular inspections ensure your system runs efficiently, maintaining low radon levels over time.
  • Is radon mitigation noisy?
Modern systems are designed for quiet operation, ensuring they won’t disrupt your daily life.
  • Will a radon mitigation system affect my energy bills?
Mitigation systems are designed to be energy-efficient, and any impact on bills is usually minimal compared to the health benefits.
  • Can radon mitigation systems be installed in existing homes, or only in new construction?
Radon mitigation systems can be installed in both existing homes and new construction. Retrofitting existing homes with radon mitigation systems is a common practice and can effectively reduce radon levels to safe levels.
  • Will radon mitigation affect the resale value of my home?
Radon mitigation can actually enhance the resale value of your home by providing potential buyers with peace of mind regarding radon levels. Additionally, having a radon mitigation system in place demonstrates proactive maintenance and care for the property.
  • Are HRV or ERV systems effective for radon reduction?
Yes, HRV/ERV systems improve ventilation, lowering radon levels by diluting indoor air, but they’re best used alongside primary mitigation methods.
  • Will sealing cracks in my foundation be enough to reduce radon?
Sealing cracks helps but isn’t enough alone. It’s part of a comprehensive approach, typically combined with active mitigation systems.
  • How do I know if my radon mitigation system is working?
Post-installation testing confirms system effectiveness, and continuous monitoring can keep you informed of any changes.
  • How much does radon testing or mitigation cost, and is it worth it?
The cost of radon testing and mitigation varies but is a worthwhile investment in your family’s health. The expense is often far less than the potential costs associated with radon-related health issues. Most customers can expect to pay around $2,000
  • If radon is invisible and odorless, how do I know it’s a real threat?
Radon’s dangers are backed by scientific research and recognized by organizations like Health Canada. Professional testing is the only way to detect radon and assess the risk accurately.
  • I've heard radon isn't a problem in newer homes. Is that true?
New homes in Calgary can still have elevated radon levels. Even with modern construction techniques, radon can enter through the ground and accumulate indoors, making testing essential.
  • Can I handle radon mitigation on my own, or do I really need a professional?
DIY mitigation is not always effective and may not meet safety standards. Things like clearance requirements and proper sealing are often missed. Certified radon professionals use specialized diagnostic equipment and techniques to ensure long-term radon reduction and home safety.
  • What happens if my radon levels are high - will it be expensive to fix?
Radon mitigation costs vary depending on your home’s needs, but professional solutions are generally affordable and highly effective. Investing in mitigation now can prevent costly health issues later.
  • What if my neighbors don't have radon issues - could my home still be at risk?
Radon levels vary widely, even between neighboring homes. The only way to know your home’s radon levels is through professional testing, regardless of your neighbors’ results.
  • What is radon, and why should Calgary homeowners be concerned?
Radon is a radioactive gas naturally released from the ground. It’s invisible, odorless, and can accumulate in homes, posing a serious health risk. Calgary’s geological conditions make homes susceptible to elevated radon levels, increasing the risk of lung cancer.
  • Is radon really dangerous, or are the risks exaggerated?
Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking, particularly among non-smokers. The risk is well-documented by health authorities like Health Canada, making it crucial for Calgary homeowners to take radon exposure seriously.
  • I've never had my home tested before - is it too late to start now?
It’s never too late to test your home for radon. Testing is the first step to protecting your health, and if levels are high, mitigation can significantly reduce your exposure risk.
  • Can I just open windows to reduce radon levels in my home?
While ventilation can temporarily lower radon levels, it’s not a long-term solution. Professional radon mitigation systems are designed to continuously reduce radon and ensure your home stays safe.
  • Do I have to share my results?
No. Sharing is completely optional - but highly encouraged. You can share anonymously, and your data helps build a clearer picture of radon levels in our community.
  • What is the Borrow to Breathe program?
It’s a free radon monitor lending program for residents of participating communities. You can borrow a digital monitor to check your home’s radon levels and help contribute to a community-wide understanding of radon risk.
  • Should I do a longer test before making any decisions?
Health Canada recommends using a long-term radon test (at least 90 days) before deciding on mitigation. The Borrow to Breathe program offers a short-term digital monitor to help you screen your home and identify if further testing is needed. If your short-term results are elevated, we suggest following up with a long-term test to get a more accurate picture before taking action.
  • Is it hard to use the monitor?
Not at all. The monitor is battery powered, automatic, and gives digital results within a few days. We’ll provide simple instructions when you pick it up.
  • Who can participate?
Anyone living in participating communities is welcome to reserve a monitor. There’s no cost, and no prior experience is needed.
  • Why is this program important?
Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers in Canada. By participating, you’re helping protect your own home and raising awareness across Rockland Park.
  • Where do I place the monitor?
Place it in the lowest lived-in level of your home—typically the basement or main floor—where people spend the most time.
  • What do my radon results mean?
Your results will be shown in becquerels per cubic metre (Bq/m³), which measures the amount of radon in the air. Health Canada recommends taking action if your home’s radon levels are above 200 Bq/m³, but even lower levels can carry long-term health risks. For added perspective, both the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) set their action levels lower than Health Canada’s guideline. If your results are elevated — or even close to these limits — it’s wise to consider steps to reduce radon in your home.
  • What happens after I return the monitor?
Once you return the monitor, you’ll have the option to upload your results anonymously. If your levels are high, we can provide resources on what steps to take next.
  • How long can I borrow the monitor?
You can borrow the monitor for up to 21 days. This gives enough time to check your home’s radon levels and return it for the next participant. We are always looking for way to improve the program and may look to extend this period in the future.
  • Is the seller required to disclose radon levels?
Currently in Alberta, disclosure isn’t legally required unless the seller chooses to share it — but many buyers are asking, and it’s becoming common practice to test.
  • Will high radon kill the sale?
Not necessarily. Buyers are more informed now. If there’s a plan in place — like testing or offering mitigation credits — it often reassures them.
  • How long does mitigation take?
Typically 1–2 days. It’s quick, and once installed, levels drop immediately. Some systems even come with performance guarantees.
  • What if the seller already did a radon test?
Ask to see the report — and check when and how it was done. If it’s recent and from a trusted source, that’s a great plus.
  • What is radon?
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that comes from the breakdown of uranium in the ground. It’s odorless, tasteless, and invisible — but long-term exposure increases the risk of lung cancer.
  • Can new homes have radon too?
Absolutely. New homes tend to be more airtight, which can actually trap radon inside. Radon doesn’t care how old or nice a house is.
  • Should we test this home before buying/selling?
It’s a good idea. Testing shows you care about safety and transparency, and it can even be a selling feature. I can help you connect with certified testers.
  • How can I reassure nervous buyers?
By framing radon as manageable, like mold or asbestos. It’s common, it’s testable, and it’s fixable. Buyers appreciate honesty and options.
  • Can we use a home inspection to test for radon?
Home inspectors don’t usually run proper radon tests because the timeframe is too short. You need 90 days for an accurate reading — but there are fast tests to get a baseline. Also, most home inspectors are not C-NRPP certified in radon measurement like a dedicated radon company.
  • Is radon really a concern in this area?
Yes - in fact, over 1 in 2 homes tested in Calgary exceed Health Canada’s radon guideline. It varies by neighborhood and even block by block.
  • Can I get cancer from living in a house with radon?
Not immediately — the risk comes from long-term exposure, usually over many years. That’s why it’s best to know your levels early and reduce them if needed.
  • What should I tell my clients about radon?
You don’t need to be the expert — just let them know it’s something worth checking. I can give you a brochure or PDF you can hand out during showings
  • Do we have to leave the house during testing?
No — you can live normally. The test just needs to sit in the lowest livable level of the home, undisturbed, for at least 90 days.
  • What happens if levels come back high?
It’s fixable. Most homes can be mitigated with a radon reduction system that costs between $2,000–$3,000. It’s not a dealbreaker — it’s just something to plan for.
  • How much does a radon test cost?
Usually between $50 and $300, depending on whether it’s a short-term or long-term test. Long-term tests (90+ days) are more reliable.
  • Can I submit results from a short-term test?
We accept both short- and long-term radon test results, but long-term (90+ day) tests are preferred for accuracy. Please indicate the test type when submitting.
  • Is my submission anonymous?
Yes. All submissions are anonymized and displayed using only general location data (e.g., postal code). We do not share names, addresses, or contact information.
  • I had a very high radon level. Should I be worried?
High radon levels can increase your risk of lung cancer over time. We recommend contacting a C-NRPP certified mitigation professional to reduce your home’s radon level.
  • Why should I test if my area already looks “low”?
Radon levels can vary dramatically from house to house — even on the same street. The only way to know your home’s level is to test it directly.
  • Why can’t I see my result on the map right away?
We review each submission for quality and consistency before publishing. This helps us maintain the accuracy and reliability of the map. Approved submissions typically appear within a few days.
  • What is the Radon Project?
The Radon Project is a community-driven initiative to collect and map radon test results from across Canada. Our goal is to raise awareness, improve public understanding, and encourage every household to test their home for radon.
  • Why does my neighborhood have no data?
It may be that no one in your area has submitted a radon test yet, or we haven't reached the minimum sample size to display results. You can help fill the gap by contributing your data!
  • Who can participate?
Anyone who has tested their home for radon in Canada can submit their results. We welcome homeowners, renters, landlords, and building managers.
  • How is my location displayed on the map?
Your location is shown at the postal code level and slightly “jittered” on the map to protect privacy. We never display exact addresses.
  • How many results are needed to display a postal code?
We require at least 3 submissions in a postal code area before displaying it on the map. This helps protect privacy and ensure data reliability.
